JW-1581 Natural Palm Wax
for Votives & Pillars
Handling and Melting of
JW-1581 Natural Palm Wax
-
Items needed: Wax, fragrance, molds,
wicks, wooden or metal spoon, pouring pot of some kind (some
people use tin cans), and votive or pillar wick pins.
Heat wax to 200 degrees in a
double boiler or presto pot (kitchen kettle-made by presto)
This is like a crock-pot only it has a thermostat control
rather than just low-medium-high. (We have used them for
years and love them.) Do not let wax sit for extended
times above 150°F. This will turn the wax a darker
color and can create a "burnt" smell.
After melting wax, add
Palm Stearic to wax for mold release (1/4 - 1/2 tsp per lb
of wax)
Heat molds.
Remove from heat and pour into
pouring container. (We use 4 cup glass coffee pots to
pour the hot wax in for melting, coloring and scenting.
The 4 cup line holds a pound of wax. This glass
definitely can stand the heat and washes out nicely so that
you can do a different scent.)
Add dye, stir well but do it
gently so you don't incorporate air in it..
Add desired fragrance oil at
about 1/2 oz - 1 oz per pound of wax (we use 3/4 oz per lb
for the most part). Stir for about 30-45 seconds.
Pour into heated mold
Position pin but be extremely
careful. Everything is now around 180-190 degrees.
Save remaining wax for second
pour.
Allow wax to cool to a point -
see instructions for votives or pillars at this point.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR
VOTIVES
-
Allow wax to cool enough to have
a hard shell on top but not pull away from the mold on the
sides. Everyone is in a different environment and this
stage will be totally dependent on the air temperature in
your environment.
-
Reheat remaining wax to 170
degrees.
-
Take a slim, long object (like a
crochet needle, votive or pillar pin, etc.) and poke a hole
in the top of the votive.
-
Pour reheated wax into votive to
the top.
-
Allow votive to harden
completely.
-
Remove wick pin and insert
wick.
INSTRUCTION FOR PILLARS
-
Allow pillar to completely cool.
-
Take a slim, long object (like a
crochet needle, votive or pillar pin, etc.) and poke several
holes in the pillar. (Poke at least half way through
the pillar.)
-
Reheat remaining wax to 170
degrees.
-
Remove pillar from mold but do
not remove pillar pin.
-
Pour reheated wax into pillar -
just enough to fill up to top of holes.
-
Allow to totally cool.
-
Remove pillar pin and level
pillar by placing on a heated surface.
-
Wax will fill hole in the bottom
so use pillar pin to punch hole again at bottom of pillar
(push pin into pillar from the top and poke through bottom).
-
Insert wick.
